Put simply, I’m a metacognition nerd.
I’m obsessed with thinking about how (and why) we think.
How we make meaning of the world around us (our reality) and how we fit in it. Our relationship with ourselves, others, work, life.
How we get tied up in our internal narrative. Where it comes from and what we can do to shift it when it gets stuck.
I’m all about understanding the stories we tell ourselves. The stories we believe to be fact and truth.
STUDY
My fascination with metacognition started when I attended a neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) practitioner training in 2019, based on the work of Richard Bandler (co-creator of the NLP model).
From there I nose-dived into understanding metacognition (thinking about our thinking). Getting coached on my own metaprograms (mental patterns that shape how we think, make decisions, and communicate) and the frames ‘running my game’.
That then escalated to vertical development and the work of Robert Keegan and Jennifer Garvey burger. Then I landed in Ken Wilbur’s Integral Theory and the AQAL model and my brain exploded a little bit more. And I’m excited to know where this adventure leads me next.
Somewhere in there it dawned on me that I’ve been curious about this stuff since university, where I gravitated towards subjects like psychology, buyer behaviour, employee experience. Why people do/say/think the way they do. How to create environments for people to thrive.
I’m committed to my own ongoing inner growth and development; I’m doing the work. Practicing what I teach. I’m driven to support others who want to step into their power, evolve and get the most of this ‘one wild and precious life’.
WORK
I’m a huge believer that metacognition should be on every school curriculum, setting our kids, the next generation of humans, up for success.
Every workplace should be developing their people’s capacity for understanding what’s getting in their way (what stories they’re telling themselves) and how to get unstuck (out of their own way) in order to do the job they’re being paid to do. Through things like ‘Leading Self’ programs and 1:1 coaching.
I’ve been immersed in organisational development, leadership development, and change-making for over 15 years now. I’m fascinated with the human experience (that’s also why I write novels in my – not so – spare time).
I call myself a ‘conscious leader’ facilitator and coach because we need to consciously wake up. How easily do we walk through life without being truly aware of why we do what we do/think/say? Once we’re conscious of what’s getting in our way, we can make intentional choices and changes.
To live with vitality and aliveness.
